南冥 曺植에 대한 근·현대 교과서 및 儒學史의 서술과 특징
초록
In the various textbooks published during the period of transition to modernity, as well as in general histories of Korea that cover the entirety of Korean history, Nam Myeong Jo Sik was not treated as an independent subject of discussion. One plausible reason for this is that Korean historical writing has fundamentally relied on political history as its core analytical and narrative framework. Because Nam Myeong Jo Sik had almost no direct involvement in practical politics, it was difficult to incorporate him into a narrative structure grounded in political history. As a result, both the frequency and volume of references to Jo Sik were extremely limited. The situation was quite different in various works on the history of Korean Confucianism. An examination focusing on the most widely read and accessible texts-those most approachable to both professional historians and the general public-reveals that Jo Sik was discussed far more extensively in accounts of Confucian intellectual history than in textbooks or general histories of Korea. These narratives generally emphasized Jo Sik’s scholarly characteristics, particularly his doctrine of gyeong(敬) and ui(義), while also highlighting his identity as a cheosa-a scholar who deliberately refrained from pursuing an official career. Moreover, some works went beyond conventional portrayals, presenting interpretations that allow Jo Sik to be understood not only as a figure who combined learning and practice, but also as a gyeongsega(經世家), someone who possessed a sense of responsibility toward society and the world at large.
