Knowing-With: Attuned Sympathy in Heidegger, Thoreau, and Wordsworth

초록

This essay develops a conceptual and methodological account of “knowing-with” the world by reading Martin Heidegger’s phenomenology of Befindlichkeit and Stimmung alongside Henry David Thoreau’s ethic of sympathetic attention, with William Wordsworth’s Romantic pedagogy of receptive perception serving as a mediating archive of practice. Heidegger theorizes Befindlichkeit as the existential structure through which Dasein finds itself already affected and situated, and Stimmung as the concrete mood or being-attuned through which that situatedness is lived and a world is disclosed as mattering; Thoreau, by contrast, proposes sympathy as a voluntary, ethically charged way of inhabiting such disclosure without reducing it to mastery. Through close readings of Heidegger’s Being and Time (§29-30), Thoreau’s “Walking,” and Wordsworth’s paired Lyrical Ballads poems, the essay argues that mooded disclosure articulated through Befindlichkeit–Stimmung and sympathy are best understood as sequential moments in an epistemic-ethical pathway: disclosure precedes decision, and practice converts salience into care. Here, care does not name Heidegger’s technical Sorge but an environmental answerability that arises when what has been disclosed as mattering becomes a claim upon interpretation and action. The final sections place this pathway in dialogue with contemporary accounts of atmosphere and propose the Befindlichkeit-Stimmung-sympathy sequence as a transferable methodological framework for environmental humanities and environmental design ethics.
