Collaborative Autoethnography on Time Allocation and Identity Exploration of University Faculty Members

초록

The purpose of this collaborative autoethnography is to explore how tenured and non- tenure-track faculty researchers in universities allocate their time and the meanings that this has for their identities. The researchers recorded their time usage from June to December 2023 and constructed and analyzed data based on time diaries, reflective memos, and joint interviews. The research findings are as follows: First, among the roles of professors, both researchers spent the most time on service (external projects). However, there was a difference in the composition of time between Researcher 1 and Researcher 2, with Researcher 1 prioritizing service > research > career development > education > research supervision, while Researcher 2 prioritized service > education > research > career development > research supervision. Second, while both Researcher 1 and Researcher 2 allocated significant time to external projects, the nature of project development differed, with Researcher 1 viewing it as an ‘economic support' and Researcher 2 as a challenge stemming from ‘workplace stabilization' and opportunities for graduate student career development. Third, regarding time usage, Researcher 1 was influenced primarily by the treatment associated with the position of non-tenured faculty, while Researcher 2 faced increased and varied role demands as her tenured faculty position, along with the status of being a mother researcher caring for children. Fourth, regarding their current identity connected to time allocation, Researcher 1 found himself in a blurred state, being ‘half researcher, half consultant,' while Researcher 2 attributed meaning to her identity of balancing multiple roles as a professor. This study discusses the significance of differences and commonalities in the construction of the researchers’ faculty identities, and concluded by suggesting directions for future research, along with the limitations of the study.
