Gangneung Danoje was called ‘Danogut (タノクッ)’ before the Japanese colonial period. The Japanese colonial period’s Japanese scholar’s ​​research report on the intangible cultural heritage accepted the notation ‘江陵端午祭’ and reflected it in the intangible cultural heritage investigation report, and the name at the time of designation as a national intangible cultural heritage was also ‘Gangneung Danoje’. In other words, the intangible cultural heritage name ‘Gangneung Danoje’ was created based on materials written by intellectuals or Japanese scholars. Intangible cultural heritage changes its appearance according to changes in the transmission environment. When it was designated as a national intangible cultural heritage in the 1960s, the committee members’ perspectives on intangible cultural heritage distinguished between what should be discovered and inherited in terms of national culture or national art and what should not. It was not standardized before being designated as a national intangible cultural heritage, but in order to designate it as an intangible cultural heritage, they tried to restore traditional festivals and folk arts that had been discontinued. Among them, Danogut was established after 1967, but mask dance was not. Dano-gut, which was passed down as a good harvest ritual around Dano after liberation, changed its form around the time of its designation as a national intangible cultural heritage in 1967. First, it changed from a ritual led by the head of the household to a ritual centered on the holder. Holders or successors of intangible cultural heritage led the Gangneung Dano-gut within the scope of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Act, and this led to the reorganization of shaman groups. This can also be seen in the composition of shaman groups based on close relationships. The Gangneung Danoje Festival, a national intangible cultural heritage, became a fixed shaman centered around the preservation association, and the ritual also gradually became standardized and systematized.
