5·18학(學)의 가능성 ― 이행기 정의와 학제적 지평

초록

This study examines trends and achievements in 5·18 Studies over the past 40 years, exploring the potential for an independent academic field of ‘5·18 Studies’ within the broader landscape of interdisciplinary transitional justice research. Beginning with the publication of “Beyond Death, Beyond the Darkness of the Age” in 1985, 5·18 Studies has established itself as a core research area in contemporary Korean history. It encompasses diverse themes, including state violence and resistance, trauma and victim recovery, commemoration and memory, responding to distortion and denial, the victimology of state crimes, truth-finding and dealing with the past, and gender-based violence. This process of development has forged a unique academic identity through cross-disciplinary knowledge production and a practical orientation towards resolving issues related to the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement. Notably, the concept of transitional justice, introduced in the 2000s, has provided a new research paradigm encompassing state violence, resistance, and issues related to dealing with the past. This study posits that the critical realist project of interdisciplinarity can serve as theoretical and metatheoretical resources, fostering both 5·18 Studies and transitional justice research as practice-based interdisciplinary fields.
