Familicide-Suicide and Care Justice : Focusing on the Gendering of Filicide-Suicide

초록

Despite its persistent occurrence in Korean society, familicide-suicide has been marginalized in suicide statistics and discourse. This marginalization is closely linked to the dominant interpretive frameworks in mainstream suicidology, which primarily reduce suicide to individual depression or psychopathology. Furthermore, the gendered interpretive framework surrounding suicide fails to adequately account for the gendered division of labor and the socio-structural conditions that produce care injustice involved in familicide-suicide. With this critical awareness, this study offers a reinterpretation of familicide-suicide from a care justice perspective. Specifically, this study (1) examines the epistemic and interpretive injustices inherent in the literature dealing with filicide-suicide in Korean society, and (2) analyzes narratives of filicide-suicide cases reported in the news media between 1990 and 2025 to expose the multi-layered dimensions of care injustice involved. Through this analysis, the study demonstrates that filicide-suicide, repeatedly occurring with similar patterns in Korea, is a complex social fact involving stratified, familialized, and gendered care structures. It further proposes that policy solutions are urgently needed for a just transition of care responsibilities.
