초록

The <General Seol-un> folktale is a type of general legend passed down primarily in the southern coastal regions of Gyeongsangnam-do. The <General Seol-un> tale has been transmitted mainly around the Su-udo area of Saryang-myeon, Tongyeong-si, where a shrine dedicated to General Seol-un exists. Consequently, the <General Seol-un> tale has been noted solely as a folktale of the Su-udo or Saryangdo region. However, the <General Seolun> legend is actually a story passed down not only on Su-udo Island but also on several islands along the southern coast, such as Yokjido and Gukdo. A crucial point is that the layers of General Seol=un's character vary significantly in the legends passed down on each island. While the Saryang-myeon region emphasizes General Seol-un's negative aspects, the Yokji-myeon region highlights his positive traits. This difference stems from the distinct local histories experienced by the various islands where the General Seol-un legend is passed down. The Saryang-myeon area served as a military island where naval forces were stationed to repel wokou raiding the southern coast. Consequently, the people of Saryang-myeon enjoyed relatively greater protection under the government forces. In contrast, the Yokji-do area suffered the double hardship of both government troops and wokou due to the government's active neglect. Consequently, General Seol-un, who deceived the government troops and defeated wokou, appears to have been portrayed as a negative figure in the Saryang-myeon area and a positive figure in the Yokji-myeon area. This legend of <General Seol-un> holds significance as an island history imbued with the sorrow and longing of the islanders.
