Environmental concerns and regulatory pressures are driving the interest in naturally derived herbicides with low toxicity and high biodegradability. This study evaluated the herbicidal efficacy of two medium-chain saturated fatty acids, pelargonic acid and caprylic acid, against Xanthium orientale L. (cocklebur) and Solanum melongena L. (eggplant), and compared their performance with that of the synthetic herbicide glufosinate-ammonium. Representative comparisons were made between the plants treated with a 100-fold dilution of each fatty acid (0.1%) and those treated with the recommended glufosinate-ammonium concentration. Herbicidal activity was assessed 48 hours after treatment by measuring reductions in leaf width, chlorophyll content, visual desiccation, and electrolyte leakage. In X. orientale, pelargonic and caprylic acids reduced leaf width and chlorophyll content by 73–75% and 5558%, respectively, whereas glufosinate-ammonium caused significantly smaller reductions of 14.7% and 10.7%. Complete desiccation (100%) was observed with the fatty acids, compared to 18.3% for glufosinate-ammonium.
