Development and Effects of a Picture Book-based Early Childhood Mathematics Education Program* DOI http://dx.doi.org/10.62783/SHSS.8.1.46 Sunyoung Choi** Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an early childhood mathematics education program using picture books on young children’s mathematical dispositions and peer interactions. The program was implemented with 20 children aged four and five over an eight-week period, consisting of one session per week for a total of eight sessions. To verify the effects of the program, a paired-samples t-test was conducted to compare pre- and post-test scores. The results indicated that the picture book-based early childhood mathematics education program had statistically significant effects on children’s mathematical dispositions and peer interactions. Significant improvements were found in all subfactors of mathematical disposition, including flexibility, confidence, persistence, self-monitoring, applicability, and interest. In addition, statistically significant positive changes were observed in both verbal and nonverbal peer interactions. These findings suggest that a picture book-based early childhood mathematics education program is not only effective in promoting children’s mathematical dispositions and peer interactions in an integrated manner, but also represents a highly practical and valuable educational approach that can support mathematical inquiry and social interaction simultaneously in early childhood education settings.
