Analysis of Aerospace Research Trends Using Social Network Analysis: Focusing on the Structure of the International Collaborative Research Ecosystem and Industrial Impacts

This study addresses the growing need to quantitatively understand the structure and flow of aerospace research as the global aerospace sector transitions into the private-led ‘New Space’ era-a critical domain shaping national competitiveness and future industries. To overcome the limitations of previous studies, which largely remained confined to policy-centric qualitative approaches or limited-scale keyword analyses, this study conducted a Social Network Analysis (SNA) on the bibliographic data of 49,719 aerospace-related articles collected from the SCOPUS database up to the year 2024. Specifically, keyword co-occurrence networks, as well as country and author networks, were constructed. Core research themes, knowledge flows, and international collaboration structures were examined utilizing cluster analysis and centrality metrics, including degree centrality, betweenness centrality, and closeness centrality. The analysis revealed that materials research, emphasizing composite materials and microstructures, alongside design and analysis research focusing on finite element analysis and optimization, form the primary research axes in the aerospace field. Additionally, the country network demonstrated that the United States holds the highest centrality, with the United Kingdom, China, Germany, and France identified as major collaborative hubs. These findings indicate that international research collaboration and knowledge diffusion in the aerospace sector are distinctly structured around specific core technology clusters and key leading nations. Ultimately, this study holds significance for structurally elucidating aerospace research trends using large-scale international academic data, and it is expected to serve as foundational data for establishing future R&D investment directions, formulating international joint research strategies, and securing a strategic position within the Global Value Chain (GVC) to maximize industrial spillover effects.
