A Study on the film The Summer Will End

초록

The film The Summer Will End vividly portrays the tragedy of modern northern Russia through the specific journeys of Kesha, who returns from prison, and Tima, who dreams of attending university, while deeply exploring themes of brotherhood, fate, and the cycle of evil. Beginning with a false accusation at a gold mining operation, Kesha's anger leads to a vault robbery and escape, during which brotherhood transforms from love to betrayal, and injustice breeds violence in a cycle that destroys the family. Fate acts as a force driving all these choices toward inevitable destruction, while Tima's final decision demonstrates resistance and awakening to fate. These themes intertwine with the prison bars of the gold mine, the desolate tundra during the escape, and Viktor Tsoi's lyrics in Konchitsya leto(The Summer Will End), powerfully conveying Russian fatalism and universal human tragedy. The film secures originality through genre fusion including Red Western and road movie elements. Kesha's revenge and escape in the frontier of Yakutia represents a modern reconstruction of the lonely gunslinger and duels from Westerns, while the journey via ferry and car expands the brothers' conflict and awakening into a road movie narrative. This is embodied in Tima's dilemma of deciding whether to betray his brother and the catastrophic collapse of the family. The directorial style harmonizes Munkuyev's meticulous narrative with Arbugaev's documentary aesthetics, maximizing emotional immersion through the visual beauty of foggy rivers and silvery tundra, Viktor Tsoi's music that seems to foretell fate, and subjective camera work. The actors' performances elevate the film's artistic accomplishment. Yura Borisov vividly expresses Kesha's recklessness and downfall through trembling hands during the vault robbery and determined eyes during the escape, while Makar Khlebnikov embodies Tima's innocence and awakening through silence upon realizing his brother's betrayal and gestures of resolution. Dmitri Podnozov visualizes the father's helplessness through sighs in the loan scene, and Alexander Mosin portrays cynical authority through the silhouette of a black jeep. This work, which fuses the regionality of Yakutian cinema with Russian heritage (Viktor Tsoi's songs), achieves both locality and universality while reflecting the survival narratives of modern Russians amid economic poverty and social oppression. In conclusion, this film contemplates the collapse of brotherhood, the inevitability of fate, the cycle of evil, and moreover, the moral responsibility and futility of survival for contemporary Russians. Perhaps audiences will remember through this film the landscape and emotions of Russia in the 2020s.
