Exploring EEG Changes in Drug Offenders Recalling Drug Use Experiences in Correctional Facilities

초록

This study aimed to identify the basic EEG patterns (theta, delta, alpha, and beta waves) of drug offenders sentenced to prison for administering prohibited narcotics and explore their relationships with key variables. Furthermore, we measured EEG changes during a state of indirect experience, a state of reminiscing about past drug use. Key findings included: First, drug offenders had significantly lower beta levels and relatively higher theta and delta levels compared to the general population. Second, comparing measurements taken during a stable state with those taken while reminiscing about past drug use revealed a decrease in beta levels and an increase in theta and delta levels. Finally, age, number of offenses, and the distress of incarceration significantly influenced a lpha w ave activity. This study is the f irst domestic s tudy of drug offenders in correctional facilities using EEG, and is significant in that it suggests the potential for use as a physiological indicator to predict treatment outcomes. Future research should utilize high-resolution EEG equipment to comprehensively analyze the relationship between drug use characteristics and recovery-related psychological variables across various drug addiction groups. This approach could provide useful baseline data for developing evidence-based psychological intervention strategies that reflect the physiological characteristics of drug offenders.
