Reconstructing the Ganghoe (講會) of Nobaekheon Jeong Jaegyu and Their Philosophical Significance

초록

This article focuses on the practice of ganghoe (講會, scholarly gatherings) as a method of Confucian knowledge transmission and moral cultivation in the Gangwoo region during Korea’s modern transitional period. It examines the philosophical structure and significance of Nobaekheon Jeong Jaegyu (鄭載圭), a central figure of the Nosahakpa (蘆沙學派, Nosa School). While faithfully inheriting the ideas of his teacher Gi Jeongjin, Jeong Jaegyu actively engaged with alternative interpretations from other schools—most notably Lee Jinsang’s theory of “the mind is principle” (心卽理)—to creatively reconstruct the theories of human nature (心性論) and the relationship between principle and material force (理氣論). This article analyzes Jeong's lecture records to trace his independent interpretations and logical strategies concerning key Neo-Confucian issues such as the relationship between Mugeuk (無極) and Taeguk (太極), Libal–Qibal (理發·氣發), and the Four Moral Sprouts (四端) and the Seven Natural Emotions (七情). By understanding ganghoe not merely as a didactic activity but as a space for performative philosophical discourse, this article aims to reassess the continuity and adaptability of Confucian thought during the late Joseon dynasty.
