Comparative Evaluation of Surface Roughness of Walnut and Ash under Surface Processing Conditions Using a Customized Sanding Apparatus

초록

Wood surface processing critically affects product durability and quality. This study examines surfaceroughness and pore-filling characteristics of walnut(Juglans regia) and ash(Fraxinus rhynchophylla) using acustom sanding apparatus. A specialized jig maintaining constant pressure and stable rotation was developedto overcome manual sanding limitations. Surface roughness was measured on transverse sections using 120,220, 400, and 1000 grit sandpapers, with microscopic analysis of pore filling. Both species showed consistentroughness reduction with finer grits. Walnut achieved 0.242at 1000 grit versus 0.329 for ash, demonstrating superior surface uniformity. The custom apparatus reduced processing time by 90.4%(from 10.2to 0.98 minutes) while improving reproducibility by 73.2%(CV: 18.3% 4.9%). Results provide optimalprocessing conditions for hardwoods. Walnut suits high-grade finishing applications, while ash remainsadvantageous for structural uses requiring strength and elasticity.
