.This study examined literacy development in school-aged children from multicultural families through the lens of linguistic hybridity while challenging deficit-oriented interpretations. Six elementary students in County C, Gyeongnam Province, were assessed using the Korean Language-based Reading Assessment, covering decoding, comprehension, phonological awareness, rapid automatized naming, dictation, and thematic writing. Literacy was analyzed across three dimensions of hybridity: formal, functional, and cognitive. Results revealed marked individual differences. Several non-standard performances were better understood as hybrid language processing shaped by interactions between home and school languages rather than as language deficiency or developmental delay. These findings highlighted literacy development as a dynamic, generative process. However, reliance on a single assessment tool limited the distinctions between hybridity and developmental factors, underscoring the need for future research incorporating discourse analysis and ethnographic approaches.
