‘장자못 이야기’의 욕망

This paper aims to analyze The story of Jangjapond with the keywords of desire in taboos and violations. A daughter-in-law breaks the taboo of not looking back, which leads to tragedy. To broaden the understanding of the story, the categorization on tragedy from Aristoteles is applied. The story of Jangja-pond is firstly analyzed as complicated plot, simple plot, plot in ethos and plot in pathos. Secondly, under the classification between plots in ethos and plot in pathos, the objects of a daughter-in-law’s violation are analyzed, which are from her father-in-law’s remarks and a monk’s warnings. Her desire to break the taboo of not looking back is read as the term Knower from Jacques Lacan and the Desire Productivity from Gill Deleuze in plot in ethos and plot in pathos. Tragedy with plot in pathos is concerned with the sensory stimulation, while tragedy is aroused from the social convention in plot in ethos. It is clear that there are more stories with plot in ethos in The Story of Jangjapond. The results from the analysis under J. Lacan’s imaginary, symbolic and real order are as below; a daughter-in-law identifies her fear with the rules of her family or social conventions in the tragedy of ethos while it becomes the natural phenomena in the tragedy of pathos. The natural phenomena in the order of pathos makes her enter in the real order. In contrast, the rules of her family or social conventions in the tragedy of ethos let her stay between symbolic and real order. Meanwhile, G. Deleuze focuses on the productivity of desire. According to G. Deleuze, human beings and even capitalistic society are identified as Desiring Machines. In the view of G. Deleuze, a daughter-in-law’s violation in the tragedy of ethos can be read as the impulses against the conventions which has the altitude of repetition. On the other hand, the Deterritorialization beyond the territory of herself becomes the driving force to produce the desire for her violation. The contrasting points of view broaden the accounts of The Story of Jangjapond. This paper implies academic significance in that; first, different from the studies which focus on the punishment or the act of looking back, this paper defines the object of the analysis to the daughter-in-law herself, second, it analyzes her inner desire under the theories of Aristoteles, J. Lacan and G. Deleuze.
