정신장애인의 커밍아웃에 대한 대중의 인식

Public’s perception of coming out for people with mental illness

초록

This study focused on the premise that the perception and reactions of the public play a decisive role in the coming out process of people with mental illness. A survey was conducted with 567 adults aged 20-64, each of whom was randomly presented with one vignette. This results was as follows. First, the public perceived that the benefits of coming out outweighed and expected that they would show positive reactions to disclosure. Second, there were no significant differences among the three disorders in the perception of benefits and costs. Third, in terms of expected reactions, schizophrenia elicited lower positive reactions and higher negative reactions. Forth, willingness to disclosure a potential mental health problem was lower for depression only in relations to general medical professionals and relatives or friends. Based on these findings, this study suggests the need for continuous anti-stigma efforts and the development of support strategies to facilitate coming out.
