문화제국주의와 스포츠의 재전유: 캄보디아 페탕크의 역사적 전개

초록

[Purpose] This study aimed to analyze the historical process through which pétanque, introduced to Cambodia during the French colonial period, became localized as a community sport and appropriated as a national competitive sport from the perspective of cultural imperialism. [Method] Academic literature, newspaper articles, and official records from international organizations and sport governing bodies were analyzed, supplemented by fieldwork conducted in Phnom Penh in 2023 and 2025, including observations and informal conversations with local participants and stakeholders. [Result] First, pétanque was introduced within the asymmetric power relations of French colonial rule but became localized in Cambodian everyday culture due to its low cost, spatial accessibility, and community-oriented characteristics. Second, it was institutionalized as a national competitive sport through the organization of governing bodies, national athlete development, and international sporting achievements. Third, through this process, pétanque was appropriated from a colonial cultural legacy into a symbolic national sporting asset of Cambodia. [Conclusion] Pétanque in Cambodia demonstrates how a colonial sport can be localized and appropriated as a national cultural asset.
