영남 통범제 천수바라무 춤사위와 의미 분석 - 함안 달전사 전승 천수바라무를 중심으로 -

초록

The Cheonsubaramu, a core component of the Haman Suryukje (Water-Land) Ritual preserving the Tongbeom tradition, unfolds with the chanting of Cheonsu Darani, composed of 442 syllables structured in binary and ternary forms. The accompanying methods follow this framework, applying “outward striking” and “bara gathering” for two-syllable segments, and “three-syllable striking” for ternary sequences. Structurally, the dance integrates fundamental movements: dividing and turning for two-syllable sequences and lifting and turning for three-syllable sequences. The choreography transitions from dividing to lifting involve turning and bara gathering, adhering to the basic sequence: two-syllable dividing>two and three-syllable: turning>two-syllable gathering>three-syllable lifting. Based on dance movement alterations within gathering gestures, the sequence manifests in seven distinct types. The Cheonsubaramu, a ritual commonly and frequently enacted within Buddhist ceremonies, holds profound symbolic meanings that can be explored from several viewpoints as follows: First, through an examination of the Gabeomdalma (伽梵達摩) translation, it was verified that chanting the Cheonsu Darani reflected fifteen types of Myeonaksa (免惡死; untimely demise) and fifteen forms of favorable life (善生). Second, Cheonsubaramu was verified as a ritual dance for purifying the sacred site, based on the strict procedural details of the Eomjeongpalbangpyeon Method in temple establishment rites. Third, the dance serves as a symbolic expression of Yukbaramil, the six practices of Buddhist cultivation. Examining the correlation between dance movements and Yukbaramil, the Cheonsubaramu is distinguished into foot movements and hand movements. Foot movements symbolize generosity (布施), morality (持戒), and patience (忍辱), while hand movements represent sincere effort (精進), meditative concentration (禪定), and wisdom. As to its core dance movements, dividing embodies patience and wisdom while turning signifies generosity and sincere effort. Lifting and turning encapsulate morality and meditative concentration. Thus, the Cheonsubaramu materializes the cultivation of Yukbaramil into a performative Buddhist practice.
