Abstract

Lawrence himself lamented that the “wildness” of his father’s generation was gone, and the dutiful sons in his own generation now made “good” husbands. In Sons and Lovers, Paul experiences a dissociation consciousness of his own inferiority. The distorted love of Paul’s mother prevents him from establishing a normal sense of the self. The most inclusive theme in Sons and Lovers is one of bondages. His “Piano” shows that the Oedipus complex caused by a conflict between present experiences and past memories leads to an obsession over his mother. In addition, in his “The Snake,” he is divided between respect and honour on the one hand and fear and loathing on the other. The snake symbolizes liberation of the self to restore human nature and the life force.
