Abstract
This study examines the geomorphological evolution of the Upo Wetland and the physical and chemical properties of surface sediments to inform conservation and management strategies for the Upo Wetland Protected Zone. Although evidence of human activity was already apparent in the 1910s, major geomorphic changes began in the 1950s. Between the 1950s and the early 1990s, extensive land reclamation, agricultural expansion, embankment construction, and river modification profoundly altered the wetland, resulting in a landscape broadly similar to the present-day setting. Since the early 1990s, vegetation has expanded within the wetland, while reclamation has continued in some peripheral wetland areas. More recently, restoration projects, including the recovery of Sanbakbeol have contributed to more stable management conditions. Analysis of eighteen surface sediment samples collected from the protected zone indicates that sediment properties vary according to land use and bedrock type across the catchment. High concentrations of available phosphorus at inflow sites suggest the influence of upstream agricultural activities. Based on these findings, this study proposes the establishment of at least four monitoring sites and the implementation of management measures to reduce sediment and nutrient inputs into the Upo Wetland Protected Zone.
