Abstract
As concerns about climate change and energy supply instability grow, the significance of renewable energy sources has become more pronounced. Among these, wind power stands out as a sustainable and clean energy option that does not contribute to environmental pollution. In wind turbines, the pitch system is crucial for optimizing efficiency and stability, with the pitch bearing being a vital component. The bearing is protected by a rubber seal, which safeguards against external environmental factors and prevents grease leakage. This study aims to experimentally evaluate the performance of acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) seals used in wind turbine pitch bearings and to analyze their wear mechanisms. The study uses a rotating wear testing apparatus developed at Gachon University to analyze the wear characteristics between the rubber seal and a zinc-coated metal disc. Experimental results show that the friction coefficient of the rubber seal can be categorized into three distinct stages over time, with an initial phase of rapid wear followed by the maintenance of stable friction coefficient. This behavior has significant implications for the long-term durability and performance stability of rubber seals. The study’s findings provide essential data for optimizing the design of rubber seals in wind turbine pitch bearings and for establishing maintenance schedules. It is anticipated that this research will contribute to the development of lifespan prediction models and the performance optimization of rubber seals in future studies.
