- Abstract
- This study examines negative response words unique to the Gyeongsang dialect, focusing on exclamation-type and adverb-type expressions as their origins. These informal expressions reflect the dialect's distinctive characteristics. In the Gyeongsang dialect, ‘uh-uh-uhng’ (으으응, not really) is a representative exclamation used as a negative response to various preceding utterances. Adverb-type negative response words exhibit somewhat strong modal meanings and are closely connected with negativity when functioning as adverbs. ‘Eop-si’ (없이, none) lexically conveys the denial of existence. Additionally, ‘eo-de’ (어데, nowhere or no way), ‘hamboore’ (함부레, absolutely not), and ‘eng-gai’ (엥가이, not too much) are often combined with an indefinite sentence or with a rhetorical interrogative indicating negativity, and are fixedly combined with a certain ending form to indicate the meaning of negativity.
