Abstract
In Kazuo Ishiguro’s long fantasy novel The Buried Giant, there is a she-dragon named Querig who can breathe mist and make memories disappear. And through the act of killing, the dragon drives the plot of the novel. This study aims to analyze the overlaps and the differences between Querig and other evil dragons as well as the meaning of Querig’s death by focusing on the she-dragon Querig, combined with the inherent evil images of Western dragons. It is proposed that the she-dragon Querig in The Buried Giant differs from the evil stereotypes of dragons in Western culture because she is portrayed as a scapegoat. This paper concludes by analyzing the meaning and contradiction of Querig’s death, it draws the following conclusion: everything and its development have two sides, thus Querig cannot be unilaterally thought of as the evil dragon. Moreover, the essence of the she-dragon’s image should be considered dialectically.
