Abstract

This paper wrestles with an ontological question of what it might be like to live with matter, with which we’re inseparably interwoven, in a world of uncertainty and contingency. The matter in this case include humans, nonhumans, things, objects, energy, potentiality, inert and dead entities―all of which legitimately participate in constructing what we call “environment.” Issues discussed here contain: the significance of being emotionally involved in a specific place, instances of chemical or bodily semiotics shared by species and their fate in the age of climate change, lively matter and its power, the virtues of things, the contested status of agency when it is not something that belongs to individual entities, the problems arising out of the nature/culture dichotomy, and the art of attentiveness which, I think, is essential for environmentally sustainable future.
