- Abstract
- The objective of research is to study the attitude towards family in Miyazaki Hayao's “Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea”. This movie was released in 2008, when indiscriminate murders occurred one after another, upsetting and disturbing the Japanese society as a whole.
Sosuke, a 5-year-old boy, loves Ponyo,a goldfish girl. By licking human blood, she becomes a half-fish and could even transform herself into a human. Sosuke said he liked all of Ponyo no matter what. Here, the respect for diversity of existence beyond species can be identified.
In the 21st century the transformation of family is taking place in Japan, when Miyazaki addressed the story of marriage between humans and non-humans. The wedding of Sosuke and Ponyo suggests a bond between different organisms. It seems that Director Miyazaki understands the nature of the transformation, which goes beyond the common sense of a gendered family. Finally, however, when Ponyo chooses to be human, Director Miyazaki seems to be returning to a human-centered family value.
