“一片+AP”结构及其认知解释

Abstract

The classifier “pian(片)” can combine with an adjective to form the structure of “yipian(一片)+AP”, as in “yipian qihei(dark)”, “yipian anjing(quiet)”, and “yipian huanle(happy)”. This paper made an attempt to interpret the combination of “pian(片)” and adjectives from a cognitive perspective, and demonstrate some semantic and syntactic characteristics of this structure. The study shows that the structure of “yipian(一片)+AP” appears as a result of the partitioned meaning of the classifier “pian(片)” highlighted on the cognitive basis of metonymy. The classifier can be seen as denoting a corresponding space in a cognitive scene. Moreover, through the use of “pian(片)”, the “AP” here is temporarily interpreted as something with a boundary, and endowed with the obvious “partitioned” image of “pian(片)”. Therefore, it can be regarded as a substantive in function.
