Abstract

The study examines the relations of gendered war and power during wartime in Pat Barker’s The Silence of the Girls. It highlights how historical records often overlook women’s experiences, while the Foucauldian concept of power helps explain the ways in which gendered power operates on women’s bodies during war, perpetuating patriarchal narratives and reinforcing gender norms. The ‘femina sacer’ is introduced as a concept of women’s bodies being systematically utilized and dominated during war. Barker’s novel illustrates how war reinforces patriarchal order and phalanx-centered symbolic systems, making women more subordinate. However, the study concludes with a discussion on how Barker challenges heroic war narratives and highlights women’s potential for liberation. Overall, the study sheds light on the complex interplay between power, gender, and the body in the context of war.
