Abstract
We assessed the impact of barriers to fish migration using an agent-based model (ABM), which described heterogeneous behaviors in complex systems based on (rule-based) programming of micro-level processes. The software NetLogo, one of popular ABM platforms, was adopted to build a simulation model for fish movement across fish ladders in a 2-D river system. Performance of the developed model was evaluated in terms of the size of ladder (specifically for the width) and initial fish population as well as both the number of ladders and passage efficiency. Results showed that passage efficiency decreased as the number of the ladder on the river network increased. On the other hand, an increase in the size of ladder and fish population was found to enhance fish movement progressively up to certain thresholds, specifically less than the ladder width of 6 m and 300 fish. Although we did not clearly explain the reason for this saturated movement, end-users were capable of further extending the functionality of the simulation model from future experiments. Therefore, we believe that the modeling approach examined in this study not only can be used to identify potential barriers disrupting fish passage, but also retrofits fishways to existing hydraulic structures.
