Examined in this article is the consciousness of historical succession reflected in GoryeoSegye(高麗世系), which is a documentation of the Goryeo royal family ancestors’ genealogical line and history. The founder king Taejo Wang Geon(王建)’s posthumously naming of three generations of his ancestors as kings was due to the fact that in the early days of the dynasty the last leader of the late Shilla dynasty was also still being treated as a king. And the reason he established a 7-generation genealogy including himself as well as three generations of his own great grandmother’s ancestors was to position himself as an Emperor, or a Heavenly King(天子). From GoryeoSegye we can see how the Goryeo people viewed their own heritage and the history of their king. Scenes like Ho‘gyeong(虎景) departing from the Baekdu-san mountain and Jakjegeon(作帝建) being referred to as a “Goryeo figure[‘高麗人’],” both show us the Goryeo people’s sense of origin fixed on the late Goguryeo dynasty. Meanwhile, the fact that Ho‘gyeong called himself the “True-bone Military Leader[Seong’gol Jang’gun, 聖骨將軍],” and the narrative which linked together (with Mt. Buso as a linchpin) Mt. Pyeongna[平那山] where Ho‘gyeong became a mountain deity and Mt. O’gwan[五冠山] where Gangchung(康忠) had his base of operations, serves as another analogy to the supposed notion that Goryeo and Shilla merged with each other to accomplish the unification of the Three Hans[Samhan Iltong, 三韓一統]. Other stories, such as the one in which Boyuk(寶育), who had earlier entered the Jiri-san mountain to leave the secular world, dreamt (upon returning to the world) of the Three Hans turning into a sea after urinating on the Gok-ryeong(鵠嶺) mountain range, or the one in which Jakjegeon moved to where Gangchung had been living in Song’gak, or the one of Yong’geon(龍建) building a new residence, all symbolize the story of Goryeo unifying the Three Hans. In the meantime, situating Dang Emperor Sukjong in the place of the First ancestor(始祖) Boyuk seems like an attempt to dilute Goryeo’s fundamental identity as a Goguryeo-based entity.-
