| dc.description.abstract | In his novel The Sound and the Fury, William Faulkner critiques American eugenics and the impact of disability stigma in early 20th-century America. The novel examines disability through the perspectives of the three Compson brothers, who struggle to communicate with the outside world due to their self-enclosed and distorted narratives. Each unique narrative represents a distinct psychological barrier: Benjy’s autism, Quentin’s excessive obsession with his sister Cady and resulting schizophrenia, and Jason’s distorted mindset of victimhood. Using modernist techniques, the novel portrays the brothers’ non-communicative monologues and their psychological states, underscoring the effects of social prejudice and eugenic beliefs on the family’s decline. This paper examines the communication difficulties of the male narrators and the message conveyed in the novel within the framework of disability narratives. | - |
