- Abstract
- This study explores Sarah Waters’s approach to queering the detective novel genre in her 1920s-set work, The Paying Guests. It investigates how characters challenge societal norms and embrace queer desires within the heterotopian spaces conceptualized by Foucault—spaces that are further disrupted by the aftermath of war. Departing from traditional feminist and queer theoretical frameworks, this analysis focuses on Waters’s distinctive approach to history, genre, and narrative dynamics. By exploring historical context and spaces where queer desires are both reproduced and subverted, the study reveals the intricate interplay between queerness and the detective genre in Waters’s writings. Employing an integrated analytical approach, this study sheds light on aspects of Waters’s narrative that challenge conventional interpretations, expanding the scholarly inquiry into her narrative innovations.
