| dc.description.abstract | The intention of this study is to provide the basic data to identify the best suitable buildings for implementing hydrothermal energy systems in the South Gyeongsang Province and to develop a methodology for assessing the feasibility of those systems in the selected buildings. A unified dataset was developed by merging two databases, one for water supply pipe networks and the other for buildings, available in six cities. During the initial screening, a limited number of buildings were selected from the prepared dataset based on predetermined criteria such as distance from water source, usage, and cooling and heating load. In the next step, the feasibility of hydrothermal energy was assessed only for candidate buildings by assigning different weights to each factor such as distance from water source (30 %) and cooling and heating load (30 %) as well as tCO2 reduction (40 %). Our findings showed that the theoretical potential of hydrothermal energy for water supply pipes was high in the order of water intake sites in Mulgeum, Namgang, and Changam. While the best candidate buildings, including both public and private ones, were located in the Changwon and Yangsan cities, private buildings were more beneficial in adopting hydrothermal energy systems than public buildings in terms of distance from water source and cooling and heating load. The feasibility assessment from candidate buildings also demonstrated that hydrothermal energy applications were more effective in private buildings than public buildings, specifically in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, although our self-calculation done automatically by excel macros slightly underestimated all important factors such as energy savings, tCO2 reduction, and cost-benefit than the precise consulting estimate. We believe that the methodology proposed in this study can be used for the pre-screening process of assessing the applicability of renewable energy systems over large areas. | - |
