- Abstract
- The Adyghe ethnos is artificially separated and different names as Adygeans, Kabardians and Circassians(Cherkes), but are the oldest indigenous group of Caucasus. They are one of the first peoples to accept Islam in Europe.
First, Adygeans, who became indigenous leading peoples of the Republic of Adygea, resulted in the artificial border setting of the Soviet Union and the national dispersion due to forced migration.
The Republic of Adygea is a republic in Krasnodar Krai, a Russian-speaking region, and it is risky of being absorbed and disappearing in Russia in a short period of time, given that Adygeans do not occupy a majority and is less than half of Russians, and that various types of Russian assimilation policies are concentrated.
Although the titular nation, Kabardians occupy the majority in Kabarda-Balkaria, the indigenous leading Kabardian occupies the majority in Kabarda-Balkaria. But the Turkic Balkars are also indigenous leading peoples. Given that the Balkars are ethnic peoples such as Karachai-Cherkessia and that various types of Russian assimilation policies are concentrated, it is highly likely that the ethinc-language situation of the Republic will gradually change to favor Russians and Russian language.
In Karachai-Cherkessia, the Adyghe people, Circassians, are titular nation but only a quarter of Turkic Karachai and a third of Russians. The Karachai peoples are Turkic peoples like the Balkars of neighboring Kabarda-balkaria, and their influence is getting bigger and bigger.
However, the language of the Adyghe ethnos and his language are also threatened by the Russian language regulations as a mother language and the strengthening of Russian language education in the North Caucasus, which encompasses all three republics.
