Abstract

In recent years, the rapid growth of native OTT services has been noticeable in Russia. This is certainly unusual considering the short history of Russian OTT platform. What has driven the rapid growth of the Russian online video market? This paper outlines the history of OTT services in Russia and looks at their current state, focusing on the media environment and unique cultural context in Russia that made this possible. In addition, we will also look at the new trends in Russian films and TV shows brought about by the growth of OTT services and predict the impact this will have on the Russian media industry as a whole in the future. In this paper authors look through the history and status of online movie theater «START», which recently attracts attention as an emerging powerhouse in Russian OTT service market by releasing interesting and unprecedented TV dramas in succession, and analyze the influence of contents transmitted by this platform, predict the advent of a new wave in Russian TV dramas leaping beyond the monotonic contents and leading to cultural diversity in Russian society.
