Abstract
In this study, we aim to understand the semantics and pragmatics of ‘bojosa’ (i)ya more in-depth by examining the (i)ya in terms of semantic relation, scalar-implicature, and information-structure. The main discussion of this article is summarized as follows. First, (i)ya represents the semantic relationship of weak exclusion, and at the same time, the meaning of propositional modal necessity and event modal necessity. Second, the modal meaning of (i)ya seems to be formed by scalar-implicatures which is formed on a scale according to modal strength. Third, (i)ya can be used only when it is assumed that listeners can predict or know the information about paradigmatic focus, so it also has the meaning of 'hearer's already knowing' about paradigmatic focus. Fourth, (i)ya can also appear in syntagmatic focus. The fact that (i)ya seems to have certain restrictions in syntagmatic focus is actually related to the meaning of 'hearer's already knowing'. Fifth, (i)ya can appear only in topics that are bound to the previous discourse. The point of this restriction is 'the listener's old information'. Since (i)ya has the meaning of 'hearer's already knowing', it is difficult to use for a topic that is completely new and not active at all in the listener's knowledge state.
