Abstract
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of fracture toughness of silicon nitride ceramics for ballbearings on surface machining and apply it to the deveopment of silicon nitride ceramics with excellentmachinability. For the experiment, the surface machining characteristics were evaluated by applying ElectrolyticIn-process Dressing, ELID grinding technology using for nanosurface generation processing of ceramics. #325diamond grinding wheel is used in the roughing processes to remove surface defects that occur in sintering processof ceramics and to increase the material romoval rate. #1200 diamond grinding wheel is used to remove grindingmarks created in the roughing process. The surface roughness and surface images were measured using surfaceroughness tester and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, FE-SEM for comparative analysis of the groundsurface. As a result of the experiment, it was found that the workpiece with high fracture toughness had excellentsurface roughness, while the workpiece with relatively low fracture toughness had worse surface roughness.
