- Abstract
- Syncope is defined as the deletion of a schwa within a word. The consonant clusters created by syncope have usually been analysed as coda-onset clusters. The CVCV model proposed by Lowenstamm(1996) interprets phonological constituent structure as the consequence of lateral relations that hold among segments. Lateral relations are the central tool of CVCV. CVCV holds that syllabic constituency reduces to a strict consecution of non-branching Onsets and non-branching Nuclei in all languages. The purpose of this paper is to show that syncope-created consonant clusters in English actually have the same structure as branching Onsets. In chapter two different types of syncope are classified. Chapter three presents representations of consonant clusters by CVCV. In chapter four we analyse the syncope created consonant clusters and represent them by the CVCV model. Finally we conclude the study in chapter five.
