- Abstract
- The CVCV theory proposed by Lowenstamm(1996) interprets phonological constituent structure as the consequence of lateral relations that hold between segments. CVCV holds that syllabic constituency reduces to a strict consecution of non-branching Onsets and non-branching Nuclei in all languages. The purpose of this paper is to show that English syllable structure has the CV type, which is known as the most basic syllable structure in human languages. It will be suggested that English syllable structure is composed of a sequence of an obligatory onset and nucleus, based on Government Phonology and Strict CV Phonology by Lowenstamm(1996). In chapter two, I review some syllabifications from the traditional point of view and discuss English syllabification by the GP and CVCV model. In chapter three, different empty categories will be discussed. Chapter four shows some phonetic grounds of the CV type. Finally I conclude the study in chapter five.
