Abstract
Lee, Kwangho. 2009. Successive Cyclic Movement in English and Scandinavian and Order Preservation. Linguistics Research 26(2), 15-30. Fox & Pesetsky (2005) proposed a theory of cyclic linearization to account for successive cyclic movement in terms of Spell-out domains. They suggested that word order in a phrase determined in a lower Spell-out domain cannot be changed in a higher domain. This is called "Order Preservation." Scandinavian Object Shift phenomena can be explained well in terms of their theory of Order Preservation. However, problems arise with respect to Scandinavian wh-movement/Quantifier Movement and English wh-movement/Topicalization. Without an appropriate mechanism to make Scandinavian wh-phases/quantifiers and English wh-phases/topicalized expressions stop by the left edge of VP, a word order conflict will arise between CP and VP. To solve this problem I suggest parametrization of the property of verbal heads. (Gyeongsang National University)
