- Abstract
- The aim of this paper is to examine the effect of nutrition labeling on consumers' nutrient intakes. Propensity score matching(PSM), which controls for selection bias, was used to evaluate the effect of label use on intakes of five nutrients such as total calorie, calorie ratio from total fat, calorie ratio from carbohydrate, sodium and fiber. Survey data from 2007 Korea Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was utilized in this study. I found that reading nutritional information on the label decreases both total calorie and sodium intakes, even though their magnitude being not much, but, it appeared to have little effect on calorie ratio from fat, calorie ratio from carbohydrate, and fiber intakes. One thing we need to be careful in interpreting the results is about the impact of eating out on nutrient intakes. Nutrient intakes caused by eating out were not taken a consideration into the evaluation of nutrition labeling effect bacause nutrition labeling was not implemented at the food-away-from home sector at the survey year.
