- Abstract
- This paper aims to point out some problems in English compound classifications previously studied and to propose an alternative classification based on the grammatical relations between compound constituents and on the headedness of constituents. On the basis of headedness of constituents, English compounds are classified as endocentric or exocentric. The distinction between syntactic headedness and semantic one is needed to classify English compounds. Based on the relations between constituents, English compound words are classified as attributive, subordinative, copulative, or appositive. The dimensions for English compound classification should be kept separate. The proposed classification makes the distinction between synthetic and root compounds unnecessary and presents a consistent use of labels.
