The thesis deals with such cultural conflicts of the invisible connection between American Dream and Orientalism, which have been misused as the main governance methods in modern capitalism. Based on the cultural opposite structure of The Great Gatsby, Death of a Salesman, this study emphasizes the social sacrifice of individual for the survival of the superb power using the absurd fairy and illusion which anyone can be rich and have power only if they make much effort at works and obey the orders from the top classes. M. Butterfly draws out the inherent camouflages and pharisaism in Orientalism, which was created by Western culture and Christian white chauvinists. While warning the corruption and immorality of political and economic circumstances in American society, Fitzgerald and Miller tend to lay some reasons of social failure and psychological frustration to the futility of American Dream or Success Myth, which has been ubiquitously spread among the reckless pursuers of money and honor. They point out that the Success Dream is only an unwanted and swindling code manipulated by the ruling power and brain group in the government. The Great Gatsby and Death of a Salesman describe the miserable destruction and failure of an individual derived from the cultural and social confliction between the upper and middle classes in American modern society. The main characters deny approving the loss of their dream, and are stubborn to protest against the governance system conducted by money and authority. While they're fated to self-destruction and identity-crisis during self-defiance against the authoritarian regime, Gallimard would never give up such a stupid dream as Orientalism created by white racists and Christian supremacists through M. Butterfly.-
