Abstract
This paper intends to prove the unity of “The Rime” and “Tintern Abbey.” It has been generally believed that the two poems are distinct from each other and authored by separate individuals, Coleridge and Wordsworth. This paper, however, aims to prove that they are indeed working under the same authorial unity. Textual studies of publication can be used to confirm this idea; they originally came into the literary market in the same poetry book, Lyrical Ballads of 1798--one that has neither of the two poets as its author. Instead, a single entity called the “Author” explains his poetic principle in the Advertisement of the book. Interestingly enough, the literary scene of 1790s acknowledged this single authorial unity. Coleridge even went as far as to say that all poems of the 1798 volume are one work at least “in kind.” Second, the compositional structure of the entire volume of 1798 is heavily depended upon a poetic unity generated by the two poems’ strategic location as the introductory and the last poem. Third, the narrator of “The Rime” and the poetic “I” of the “Tintern Abbey” are bound up with each other. The transition from the one and the other represents the process of poetic growth and the birth of the poet. Fourth, they are united in thematic continuity and poetic metaphors. Last, their poetic and authorial unity are achieved by a remarkable literary experiment by Coleridge and Wordsworth.
