- Abstract
- Jisimdo is located in Jisepo-ri, Ilun-myeon, Geoje. Jimsido is famous for its natural camellia forest and historical relic. During King Hyeonjong's period of the Joseon Dynasty many moved to this island. However, under the Japanese colonization, Jimsido was considered a strategic point for the gun battery. After the independence in 1945, the Korean Ministry of National Defense hold the ownership of Jisimdo. Now, marine experiment station is operated by Agency of Denfense Development.
Our research on Jisimdo is focused mainly on its military side. The results are as follows. During the Japanese colonial era Jisimdo played a central role as a sea defense base between Busan and Japan. It was also a bridgehead of continental spoliation, and the last defense base during the pacific ocean war. However, today Jisimdo plays a small role as a military defense base and is used only as an marine experiment station.
Thus, we believe that the Ministry of National Defense and Geojesi should be united together and use historical military remains along with Jisimdo's natural environment in order to promote tourism. Although the marine experiment station may act as a barrier, we believe that cooperation between the two can overcome such obstacles.
