- Abstract
- The growth of shipping companies significantly affects the economy of a country. Since theintroduction of Chinese economic reforms, Chinese marine and shipbuilding industriesdeveloped so fast by entering the WTO and increasing trade volume. However, since theglobal financial crisis, the Chinese marine industry slowed down. This scenario puts intoquestion the competitiveness of these shipping companies.
Therefore, the study attempts to analyze the competitiveness of Chinese shipping companiesthrough SWOT/ AHP analysis. For empirical analysis, the data were collected by operatorsand experts who are related to the marine industry through questionnaires by online, phonecall and visiting, and then suggestions are provided in order to improve the competitivenessof Chinese shipping companies based on the priority of some factors such as strength,weakness, opportunity and threat. According to the result of analysis, the importance of theshipping company strength rating (S1) 0.4502 was the most important, and (W1) 0.1438, (O3)0.0594, (T1) 0.0293 in a row and Chinese shipping companies based on the priority of somefactors should follow in order of SO strategy, ST strategy, WO strategy and WT strategy toimprove and develop the capability; first, it is necessary to use the government policies tosupport marine industry actively, second, it is better to enter an alliance in order to improvethe transport efficiency and to reduce costs, third, it is needed to replace the old vessels andto prepare an institutional innovation, and last, it is necessary to secure a global service forefficient operation of vessels such as joint service and collocated operation terminal, and alsoto formulate some strategies for diversification of risks through M&A.
