dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this study is to investigate the potential of MAP(Magnesium Ammonium Phosphate) struvite recovery and phosphorus removal from the source separated urine in domestic wastewater system. Among various chemical compounds of magnesium MgCl2·6H2O delivered the highest phosphorus removal (97%) from the urine. From batch experiment various reaction parameters like pH, Mg/P molar ratio, and mixing speed were found to be 10, 1.4 and 150, respectively as optimum for MAP precipitation. A bench scale reactor under continuous operation provided phosphorus removal efficiency of 95-98.2% over the operation period. The average production rate of MAP struvite was 2.22 g/h in the reactor operation. Consequently this experimental study revealed that MAP struvite precipitation could be a potent technology for phosphorus recovery from source separated urine as a tool of DESAR(Decentralized sanitation and reuse) concept.-
