- Abstract
- BACKGROUND: Application of the transfer functionsderived from local soil data is necessary in order to developproper management protocols for agricultural soilscontaminated with heavy metals through phytoavailabilitycontrol of the heavy metals. The aim of this study was toderive the transfer functions of Korean agricultural soilsaffected by the abandoned mining sites and evaluatesuitability of the derived transfer functions.
METHODS AND RESULTS: 142 agricultural soilsaffected by the abandoned mining sites were collected andanalyzed. Two extraction methods, including 1 M NH4NO3extraction and 0.01 M Ca(NO3)2 extraction were applied todetermine phytoavailable metal pools in soils. Multiplestepwise regression of phytoavailable metal pools againstthe corresponding total metal concentration and soilproperties was conducted to derive suitable transferfunctions for estimating phytoavailable heavy metal pools.
Applicability of the derived transfer functions was examinedby calculating NME and NRMSE.
CONCLUSION: Soil pH and organic matter were validvariables for derivation of the transfer functions which wereapplicable for estimating phytoavailable metal concentrationsin the soils being contaminated by heavy metals. Inaddition, it was confirmed that transfer functions need to bedeveloped based on local soil conditions to accuratelyestimate heavy metal-phytoavailability.
