Objectives:The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between blood pressure(BP) and cognitive function in the elderly with diabetes mellitus(DM). Methods:A total of 68 patients with DM aged 65≥ years were included in this cross-sectional study. Relationships between BP and cognitive function tests were determined using Spearman’s rank correlations and multiple regression models. Results:Higher diastolic BP(DBP) was associated with lower score on Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE)(p=0.009), less verbal fluency test(p=0.007) and poorer digit span test(DST)(p=0.014). The relationship of verbal fluency test(VFT) and DBP was not attenuated after adjusting for covariates: age, gender, body mass index, depressive symptoms, education, duration of DM and quality of sleep in multivariable model. However, DBP could be predictor of MMSE and DST only after controlling for body mass index. Conclusion:The result of this study indicates that elevated DBP in elderly with DM were associated with poorer cognitive performance, particularly semantic memory. Also this study demonstrated that verbal fluency was related to DBP after multivariate adjustment. This study underlines the importance of cognitive evaluation in elderly DM patients, and suggests that a high DBP may have deleterious effects on cognitive functions.-
