dc.description.abstractIn this study, we investigated how rice husk (RH) organic filler and wood power (WP) affected the bulk improvement and reduced the drying energy required by comparing handsheets made from the RH with those made from the commercial WPs used in Korean paperboard mills. The OCC stock obtained from the machine chest in a duplex board mill was used to make the handsheets containing RH or two WPs and their physical properties of the handsheets were analyzed. To determine the effects of the RH and the WPs on the drying energy, the moisture content of the handsheets was measured and the reduction in the drying energy requirement was calculated. The handsheets containing RH showed a higher bulk and had the same strength as the handsheets containing WPs. Handsheets containing a relatively low addition level of RH had a lower reduction in drying energy compared with handsheets containing WPs. However, when the addition level increased to 9% oven-dried fibers, handsheets with RH showed the same reduction in drying energy as handsheets with WPs. Therefore, we concluded that RH has potential to replace WPs in the manufacture of duplex board.-
